8 Gennaio 1947 While people of many complexions and belief - high and low - joined in this Christmas Pilgrimage to the City of the Nativity commemorating the 1947th anniversary of the birth of Christ, British troops kept close vigil in the Holy Land lest the golden voiced bells of Peace be deafened by the dread sound of terrorist explosions. In this picture received by soldiers of the Fight Battalion Duke of Cornwall Light Infantry patrol the railway tracks between Jerusalem and the village of Artuf, near Lydda, Palestine. They are in radio contact with their headquarters and should mines be discovered can call for a demolition team. PDF

14 Febbraio 1949 Thousands of Israelis made their way to Jerusalem on February 14 for the first meeting of the Constituent Assembly, for which Jews all over the world have striven so long. The day choosen, Arbor Day, has by tradition always been celebrated as the day on which the sap rises once more in the trees and spring is re-born. In recent years new trees have been planted on this day, and this year some 6.000.000 trees were planted throughout Israel in memory of the Jews who fell in action against the Arabs. In the February 14, Dr. Chaim Weizmann, who has been elected first President of the State of Israel, declared the Assembly open. A photograph of him addressing the inaugural meeting apperas on page 258. Many diplonatic representatives were unable to attend the meeting as it was held in Jerusalem. PDF
